The Priory of New South Wales comprising mainly Knights and Dames of Honour is part of a worldwide network of Priories and Commanderies representing the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller. A Constitution granted by King Peter II of Yugoslavia in 1963, sets out the general aims of the Order, which are essentially ecumenical, the Order being committed to charitable works in aid of the sick, poor and the disadvantaged, and fostering Christian unity.

The Grand Master on 1 September 2006 created two Grand Priories; Southern Australia and Northern Australia.

The Grand Priory of Southern Australia, based in Melbourne is established with its own Constitution (June 2003), which is in tune with the Constitution of the Order, with H.E Bailiff Victor J Techritz, AM, GCSJ as the current Grand Prior. Priories and Commanderies are currently established in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, with the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and Western Australia as Commanderies. The Order in Australia is recognised as a non-Government charitable institution, with donations over $2 being tax deductible. Donations can be forwarded to The Treasurer, Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, C/- P.O. Box 192 Penshurst, NSW, 2222.

The Priory of NSW currently has 48 members and meets quarterly, on the second Wednesday, the Prior being Chevalier Fred Maestrelli, KCSJ. A Newsletter is published quarterly for information of members.
